CRI 90+ vs CRI 80: Why Colour Rendering Matters in Mirror Lighting

What Is CRI?
Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is a scale from 0 to 100 that measures how accurately a light source renders colours compared to natural daylight (rated 100). The higher the CRI, the more true-to-life colours appear under that light source.
For most commercial spaces, a CRI of 80 is considered acceptable. For environments where accurate colour perception is critical — such as retail, art galleries, and hotel bathrooms — CRI 90+ is the professional benchmark.
Why It Matters for Bathroom Mirrors
The bathroom mirror is where guests and residents assess their appearance before stepping out into the world. The quality of light at that moment matters enormously.
Under a CRI 80 source, subtle skin tones, blush pigments, and lipstick shades can appear muted or slightly off. Under CRI 90+, the same colours render with full fidelity — what you see in the mirror is genuinely what others will see in daylight.
For female hotel guests in particular, this is a meaningful differentiator. Makeup applied under low-CRI lighting frequently needs adjustment when the guest encounters natural light outside.
CRI 80 vs CRI 90: A Practical Example
Consider a red lipstick applied under two different light sources:
- CRI 80: The red may appear slightly orange or brown, depending on the specific wavelengths the source renders poorly. The result can be a shade that looks correct in the room but appears wrong in daylight.
- CRI 90+: The red renders true — the shade you see in the mirror is the shade you'll see outside.
The same principle applies to foundation matching, eyeshadow application, and skincare assessment.
What About CRI 95+ and R9?
Premium specifications often call for CRI 95 or higher, and additionally specify a strong R9 value. R9 measures the rendering of saturated red specifically — a challenging wavelength for many LED sources. A high R9 (above 50, ideally above 90) indicates the source handles skin tones and warm colours accurately.
If you are specifying for a luxury property, beauty-focused hotel, or spa environment, request CRI 95+ with R9 > 90.
Lumos LED Specification
All Lumos illuminated mirrors use premium LED arrays rated at CRI 90+ as standard. High-specification options with CRI 95+ and R9 > 90 are available on request for premium residential and luxury hospitality projects. Specify your preference when submitting your brief.
